The poppy plant, Papaver somniferum, produces opium, a powerful narcotic that contains derivatives such as morphine, codeine, heroin, and oxycodone. In India, opium poppy cultivation is only legal in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh for medicinal and scientific purposes.
